DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL LABORATORY
SCIENCE INTRODUCTION
Description of the Profession
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences
provides training in laboratory methodologies and current related
technologies, which are essential to the performance of diagnostic,
research and forensic investigations. The department is currently
accredited as the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science,
and grants degrees in this name; however, graduates are not
limited to hospital employment. While the Clinical Laboratory
Science (CLS) profession is primarily concerned with the analysis
of body fluids and tissues useful in the diagnosis and treatment
of diseases, the profession unlocks the door for graduates to
pursue a variety of careers in medicine, dentistry, and graduate
studies in research, management and business.
Students receive extensive didactic and practical
training in the clinical areas of Diagnostic Chemistry, Hematology,
Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, Immunology, and Toxicology.
They are also introduced to the concepts of cellular and molecular
technology currently used in genetic testing, forensic investigations,
and in the clinical assessment of AIDS, cancer, communicable
diseases, and metabolic disorders.
Clinical Laboratory Scientists
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist possesses
a variety of technical and intellectual skills, which are essential
to CLS practice, and applicable to other professions and disciplines.
These skills include:
The proper handling and preparation of biological samples
Performance of manual and automated test procedures which
are discipline specific
Operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining sophisticated,
computerized laboratory equipment and diagnostic instruments
Evaluation and interpretation of laboratory test data
to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Detecting and verifying abnormal results and confirming
the presence of disease states.
Maintenance of Quality Control and Quality Assurance protocols,
and solving discrepancies in laboratory procedures
Performance of managerial and technical advisory functions.
Initiating, conducting and evaluating research procedures
Programs Offered
Bachelor of Science Degree in Clinical
Laboratory Science
CLT/MLT to CLS/MT Online Delivery Option
Degree Program
The four-year curriculum consists of two
separate phases. The Lower Division (years 1 & 2) is designed
to provide general educational requirements which set the foundation
for the Upper Division. Students who successfully complete the
required semester hours of prescribed Lower Division course
work, and earn a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0
scale will be eligible to progress to the Upper Division.
The Upper Division (years 3 & 4) of the
program constitutes required semester hours of specialized instruction
in the theory of clinical laboratory science, concurrent with
laboratory experiences in student laboratories and in affiliated
hospitals.
Upon successful completion of required semester
hours of course work and clinical experience, students are awarded
the Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science.
Graduates of the program are eligible to take the qualifying
examination for registration as a Medical Technologist, MT (ASCP)
or Clinical Laboratory Scientist, CLS (NCA).
Clinical Affiliation Sites for Degree
and Certificate Programs
Howard University Hospital (HUH) presently
serves as clinical teaching site for the program. HUH facility
is equipped with state of the art instruments and is staffed
with highly competent professionals who conduct the most current
diagnostic procedures. In the senior year, students refine their
skills and gain actual work experience, under close supervision,
in all areas of the clinical laboratory.
Accreditation
The Program is fully accredited by the National
Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
