Delores A. Mounsey Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established to provide support to upper level students majoring in one of the Allied Health Science disciplines at Howard University.  The student must be fulltime with a 2.90 cumulative grade point average or above, and demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. 

 

Background Information:

This scholarship was established by Delores A. Mounsey who in 1962 began working at Freedmen’s Hospital (now Howard University Hospital) in the Department of Clinical Laboratories.  She became a member of the faculty of the College of Allied Health Sciences in 1974.  She was appointed chairman of the Department of Medical Technology (now Clinical Laboratory Science) in 1977.  For the 1987-1988 academic years, she served as Acting Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences and then Associate Dean from 1988 until 1997.  With the establishment of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, she was appointed Assistant Dean for the Division of Allied Health Sciences.  While serving in these capacities she received the Master of Education and the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study, both from Howard University.

 

With forty-one years of service to the University, Ms. Mounsey retired in 2004.  Recognized and rewarded as a student advocate, her mission was to always be available and at least listen if not solve student problems.  She was keenly aware that the responsibilities of working and/or family sometimes prevented students from obtaining academically awarded financial assistance.  Working with students over the years, realizing the continued need for financial assistance and the desire to return something to the University, she established this scholarship fund. 

 

With an initial goal of $10,000, she raised $20,000 in her first year of retirement.  Since only the interest from the fund is awarded to a student, she now wants to at least double that amount.  Contributions to the scholarship can be made at anytime; make checks payable to Howard University; in “For” write: Delores A.
