HU-AHS Teaching Academy
Purpose: to improve teaching excellence, and maintain a high level of academic achievement by providing a structured faculty training program designed to meet the needs of the Allied Health professoriate.

Program Objective:

  1. Improve quality instruction and preparation of academicians in Allied
    Health Sciences.
  2. Provide mentoring, resources, and teaching support to new faculty.
  3. Improve student academic performance.
  4. Foster faculty development needs of the “professoriate.”

Program Description:

The HU-AHS Teaching Academy provides core workshops and courses, as well as credit/incentives for enrolling in Howard University’s Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Assessment (CETLA) workshops.

Core Workshops (Mandatory):

  • The Academy: Teaching, Research & Service
  • The Fundamentals of Teaching a Course
  • Academic Advisement (Part I & II)

Skill Development Workshops (based on faculty development plan- must complete at least three from CETLA):

  • Blackboard
  • Smart Room
  • Writing Across the Curriculum
  • Information Literacy
  • Best Practices in Distance-Learning
  • Course Redesign
  • Classroom Assessment
  • Developing Student Research Projects

    *Other (as specified by faculty or Department Chair)

Program Offering:

CORE COURSES (3) three core courses offered; (1) one time per academic semester

Date/Time: Thursday and/or Fridays; 2-3 hour courses (see Calendar)

Location: Howard University Annex I Building and/or Louis Stokes
Health Sciences Library

SKILL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS (1-2) Skill Development workshops offered at least one-two times per year through the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning & Assessment (CETLA).

Process of Enrollment

  • Review and select courses from workshop calendar
  • Complete HU-AHS Teaching Academy Enrollment Form
  • Submit form to the Office of the Dean, and one copy to the Department Chairperson
  • Receive confirmation of registration with date and time
  • Attend course/workshop(s)
  • Receive verification of attendance
  • Submit verification of attendance to the Dean’s Office and a copy to the Department Chairperson no later than May 10th in order to receive a certificate of completion

*Make sure course/workshop selection corresponds with faculty development goals on your annual faculty development plan
