The Board of Trustees of Howard University authorized the establishment of advisory Board of Visitors for the schools and major centers of the University in 1998. Each Board of Visitors is advisory to the President, the Provost, the Dean of the School or Director of the Center, and the Board of Trustees. The Board of Visitors provide knowledge expertise and appraisal from outside the University and imparts informed advice to the President, the Provost, the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, and the Board of Trustees.

At the September 2008 Board of Visitors Meeting members nominated Craig Ruffin as Vice Chair. Two standing committees were established at that meeting, The Fund Raising Committee and the Research and Academic Excellence Committee. The Fund Raising Committee will be chaired by Leonard L. Edloe and supported by Pedro Lecca, Frances Savage Marcano, Michael Gee and Earl Ettienne. The Research and Academic Excellence Committee will be chaired by Carmen Kelly and supported by Enyeda Almonte, Pedro Lecca and Dean Kelly.
