Academic Reinforcement for Minority Students
Middle School Summer Kids-In-Health Program

June 20, 2009 – July 31, 2009

Program Overview

The COE Summer Middle School Kids-In-Health Enrichment Program (6th, 7th, 8th grades) is designed to attract students who express an interest in the Health Professions Careers. The program’s goal is to encourage and inform students at an early age of careers in the Health Professions; in addition, assist young students in planning and preparing for secondary education. The Program will accept 60 students for this summer 2009; therefore, we hope that you register early. The Program has adopted the (NIH) Healthy Behavior Curriculum including the following; Doing Science: The Process of Scientific Inquiry; Chemicals, the Environment, and You; Explorations in Science and Human Health; Looking Good, Feeling Good: From the Inside Out (Exploring Bone, Muscle, and Skin), How Your Brain Understands What Your Ear Hears, The Brain: Our Sense of Self, The Science of Energy Balance: Calorie Intake and Physical Activity. Investigations into Biology and Behavior. In addition, the curriculum will be integrated with Math and English classes, Health Fairs, Seminars, Workshops and Educational Field Trips. Students must exhibit leadership skills as well as mathematics/science and technology aptitude. PROGRAM COST

  • $100.00 per week for six weeks, including lunch except Fridays during field trips.

  • 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday (Pre-care and Aftercare will be offered from 7:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. for an additional cost).      
     

NEW APPLICATION DEADLINE MAY 22, 2009
Application and supporting materials must be received by May 22, 2009 by fax or e-mail

  1. Middle School Summer Enrichment Program Application.

  2. Two letters of recommendation from a math or science instructor and/or counselor.

  3. An essay that demonstrates the students’ interest in a health career fields (one page double spaced).

  4. Face to face interviews will be scheduled between June 1 -19, 2009 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
