 Faculty/Student Summer Research Program

June 5, 2006 –July 28, 2006 

PROGRAM OVERVIEW 

The Center of Excellence (COE) Faculty/Student Summer Research Program is an eight-week intensive summer program.  Twenty (20) Professional Level Howard University School of Pharmacy students will be selected to participate in the Summer Research Program. All honor society students and high achievement scholars are encouraged to apply. The COE Faculty/Student Summer Research Program is designed to increase the active engagement of professional pharmacy students in research projects along with faculty/research mentors who are conducting research which have a focus on Minority Health Issues.   

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 

African-American, Hispanic American and Native-American professional level students who are in the top 20% of their class or have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.20 and above. Student participants must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.  Students must complete and submit the following information: 

  • COE Faculty/Student Summer Research Program Application

  • Two letters of recommendation from the School of Pharmacy faculty

  • An official transcript

  • An essay that demonstrates the students’ interest in research

  • One personal (face to face) interview

An application and supporting materials must be received by February 15, 2006.  Final candidates will be contacted for a personal interview, which will be April 30, 2006.  May 1, 2006, will notify all applicants of the decision regarding their application. Applicants must reply within five days of notification. Final and official college transcripts are required which indicate the successful completion of a student's course of study and should be received by February 15, 2006.  

STUDENT SUPPORT

The program is conducted on the main campus of Howard University College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. Participation in this program is voluntary. Students will be paired with a faculty mentor. Each student will receive a monetary stipend, research course credit or research experience. Faculty Mentors will determine the level of student support for each individual research project.

Students interested in participating in the COE Faculty/Student Summer Research program and who meet the criteria stated in the preceding paragraphs should apply using the attached COE Faculty/Student Summer Research Program application form.
