The "Trial Start" Program is a mechanism by which a registered nurse, with a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and one year of professional nursing practice, may experience up to nine credits of selected graduate courses in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) curriculum before deciding to enroll in the program.  Students enroll in a Non-degree status and upon successful admission  to the FNP program, may transfer credit hours toward the degree.  Registered nurses with a Master of Science degree in Nursing and who are interested in the Post-master's Family Nurse Practitioner program may also pursue the "trial" option and will be subject to similar standards of admission and enrollment.

  1. Must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  2. Hold a current Registered Nurse License.
  3. Have practiced professional nursing for at least one year.
Admission Process
  1. Complete the regular University Application Form, indicating "Unclassified (non-degree)" classification under question 19 and "Student-at-large" status under question 21 (SAL).

Enrollment Guidelines
  1. Only courses designated as suitable for trial status may be taken.   These generally include core or foundational courses.  Clinical courses may not be taken on trial basis.
  2. No more than nine credit hours of trial courses may be taken.
  3. Students in the non-degree status have up to one year to seek and become fully admitted to the Family Nurse Practitioner Program leading to the Master of Science degree in Nursing or the Post-Master's Certificate for Family Nurse Practitioner.
  4. Enrollment in the Trial Start Program DOES NOT ensure admission to the Graduate Program as a degree-seeking student.
  5. Once admitted to the M.S.N. degree program or Post- Master's certificate program, the curriculum must be completed within five years.
  6. Credit hours earned in the non-degree status will be applied toward the M.S.N degree or the Post Master's certificate once a student has been admitted to a degree-seeking status.
  7. Academic standards and policies outlined in the Graduate Student Handbook apply to students in trial courses as well as courses taken once admitted as a degree-seeking student.
  8. Financial aid is not available in a non-degree-seeking status.
