| MISSISSIPPI DELTA PROJECT: EDUCATION AND PREPARATION OF NURSES |
| Environmental Health & Nursing: Description of Modules |
| Module 1 | Module one is descriptive of the Mississippi Delta Region (MDR)
acquainting the learner with a broad sweep of the demography, the resources, the health
status, the threats, and the values and culture of the residents. |
| Module 2 | Module two provides an in depth exploration into the culture, economics,
history, and religious complexion of the region. Understanding of such cultural,
economic, and historical features provides a foundation for addressing environmental
issues. The MDR is steeped in traditions and customs, many of which make residents
unintentionally susceptible to environmental contamination. Culture and its related
attributes are considered seriously in designing approaches and interventions for
promoting health and well being. |
| Module 3 | Module three focuses on toxicology. It provides a discussion of the
leading chemicals in the MDR, their properties, and the potential health threats related
to their presence. This knowledge is important to the roles of the nurse as
educator, practitioner, researcher, and advocate. |
| Module 4 | Nursing assessment and intervention strategies to assist individuals,
families, and communities related to environmental health is the focus of module four.
Assessment through environmental exposure interview, diagnosis, and referral strategies
are described for individuals, families, and community groups. |
| Module 5 | The advocacy role of the nurse is pronounced in this module. Many of
the MDR's environmental problems are related to unjust acts being perpetrated against it
by indiscriminate release of toxins into the air, soil, and waters of the region.
These acts of injustice are central to a general discussion of the environmental justice
movement and knowledge, practices , and roles nurses should considered in working with
community groups. |
| Module 6 | Module six provides in-depth description of mechanisms and strategies that
nurses may find helpful when entering communities, working with community organizations, partnering with communities, and helping them to be empowered in promoting and advocating for positive\ environmental health conditions. |
