* Any student receiving a grade of “C” in a clinical course must repeat that course.

Incomplete Grades

All incomplete grades (other than grades for thesis and research) must be completed by the student no later than the last day of classes of the semester in which the student is next in residence. Please report promptly to the professor of the course involved, for removal of the incomplete grade. All incomplete grades (except Thesis and Research) carry an alternate grade indication. The alternate grade indicates the grade that stands if the incomplete grade is not removed.

An incomplete grade in a clinical course must be removed before enrolling in the next clinical course.

Graduate students who register for enrollment in the thesis course will receive incomplete grades for all thesis credit until the thesis is completed and successfully defended.

RESEARCH REQUIREMENT

The Division of Nursing requires one advanced level research course for all master’s students: Nursing Research: Theory and Practice. At the completion of the course, the student selects the thesis or non-thesis option.

Thesis Option

Guidance is provided in the preparation of a thesis that meets the standards of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Division of Nursing. Individualized instruction and guidance are tailored to meet the needs of the student in the major area. The student first completes the thesis proposal and presents it to his or her thesis committee for approval. After approval the proposal is submitted to the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Following IRB approval the research is performed and documented. Upon completion, the thesis is defended before the student’s thesis committee.

The Non-thesis Option

The non-thesis option consists of two semesters of research practicum, for a total of four credits. The research practicum will provide experience with the research process in working with a principal investigator on an established research project.

Students choosing the non-thesis option are expected to confirm this in writing with advisors when planning the program of study. Final selection must be made by the student no later than the end of the second semester of full-time graduate study, or its equivalent. Selection forms are available in the Graduate Program office.
