ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS / Division of Nursing
  • First Time in College Students (Basic track)
Applicants may be eligible for admission to the program by presenting a letter of recommendation from a school official, and acceptable secondary school record/high school transcript that includes the following courses:
English
4 Years
Physics or Biology
1 Year
Social Science
2 Years
Mathematics
2 Years
Chemistry
1 Year
Preference will be given to applicants who rank in the upper one-third of their graduating class, have achieved a grade of “C” or better in the recommended high school courses, and have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average. Additionally, applicants must achieve a minimum score of 21 on the American College Test (ACT) or a minimum combined verbal-math 980 SAT.
  • Transfer/Advanced Placement Students
Transfer students must have at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA and must have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credits of undergraduate course work in order to be considered for admission. Course work must include freshman English and college algebra. Advanced placement students must have a minimum of 55 credits that satisfy the BSN degree requirements. After evaluation of transcript(s), applicable credits will be transferred to degree requirements. Clinical courses are not transferable. Official transcripts must be received before eligibility for admission may be determined or advanced standing credits are awarded.
 
  • RN-BSN Students
Registered nurses with an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Diploma in Nursing must submit both academic and licensing credentials along with an admissions application to Howard University Admissions Office. Science courses that were completed 10 or more years ago must be validated or repeated.
 
  • LPN-BSN Students
The LPN to RN Transition course is offered at both Howard University Office of Continuing Education and the University of the District of Columbia. Prerequisite courses may be taken at Howard University or may be transferred in from an accredited academic source. Transfer credits will be awarded for non-nursing courses in which a grade of “C” or better was earned. A cumulative grade point average of 2.8 is required for admission to the program.
