HISTORICAL BACKGROUND ON SCHOOL OF PHARMACY
Located in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C., Howard University is a comprehensive research-oriented, historically African-American private university offering an educational experience of exceptional quality to students of high academic potential, with particular emphasis upon the provision of educational opportunities to promising minority students. Howard University students are of many races and represent the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and about 110 foreign countries.

Pharmaceutical education at Howard University has undergone programmatic changes since its inception in 1868 as a program within the Medical Department. The first student to graduate from the University received the Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1870 and, in the same year, the Pharmaceutical program was separated from the Medical Department. In 1882, the College of Pharmacy was formed and housed within the College of Medicine on 'W' street until 1955 when it was moved into the newly constructed building at 2300 Fourth Street, N.W. In 1997, the School of Pharmacy was merged with the Division of Nursing and the Division of Allied Health Sciences to form the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CPNAHS) and Dr. Pedro J. Lecca was appointed Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Dean of the CPNAHS in 1998. The CPNAHS is part of the University's Health Sciences Center, which also comprises the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry, the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library, the Howard University Hospital, the University Cancer Center, and the Center for Sickle Cell Disease.
