WELCOME TO SCHOOL
OF PHARMACY
Dear Visitor:
On behalf of the Faculty, Staff,
and Students of the School of Pharmacy, welcome to our
homepage. Our school has been preparing students to
become leaders in the profession of pharmacy for more
than 138 years. In fact, one of the earliest graduates
of Howard University earned a degree in pharmacy. Pharmacy
is a complex, exciting profession and an integral part
of the interdisciplinary healthcare environment. The
responsibilities
and scope of practice
of the pharmacist continues to change. This requires
a serious commitment to life-long learning in order
to serve best the public interest.
Our four-year professional
program leads to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree and prepares
graduates for careers in a variety of areas. Our graduates
recognize the need to excel in the provision of pharmaceutical
care to all patients, but especially those in underserved
communities. Pharmacy graduates may choose from a number
of practice and research options where they can establish
a career. Among these is site-based practice such as:
1) ambulatory care, including chain community or independent
community practice, primary care, or home care, and
2) institutional care, including hospital, hospice,
and nursing home care. Career opportunities also exist
in specialty practice areas such as oncology pharmacy
practice, nuclear pharmacy practice, psychiatric pharmacy
practice, nutrition support pharmacy, and pharmacotherapy.
In addition, many pharmacists can be found in the pharmaceutical
industry, in local, state and national government agencies,
within insurance and managed care companies, academia
and in a variety of private practice and research activities.
We offer innovative
programs that expose our students to a diverse, multidisciplinary
environment within Howard University's Academic Health
Sciences Center. Our faculty includes active pharmacy
practitioners who manage complex therapeutic problems
and researchers engaged in discovery in such disciplines
as Pharmacoeconomics and Health Policy, Medicinal Chemistry,
Pharmaceutics, Biopharmaceutics, Natural Product Chemistry,
Pharmacy Practice and Complementary and Alternative
Drug Therapy. Additionally, the faculty of the School
of Pharmacy prepares students through graduate education.
In conjunction with the Graduate School, we offer the
Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
You are invited to
